Denizen Arts is an African diaspora-inspired, LGBT+-informed performance collaboration co-founded and co-directed by dance artist yaTande Whitney V. Hunter and theater artist Jude Sandy. In 2022 they presented the Philadelphia and world premiere of Denizen’s Walk The (pink) Elephant as Artists in Residence in The Performance Garage's DanceVisions. A participatory dance-theater ritual grappling with experiences of loss and survival within Black arts and queer communities through the first waves of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, Walk the (pink) Elephant features an original score, songs and live musical performance by Alex B. Shaw, costumes and scenic design by Kyle b.co. and lighting by Thom Weaver, with community engagement led by Zane Booker. This new work was made possible by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Independence Blue Cross (IBX), Temple University and the JKW Family Foundation, and was supported by engagements with Colours Organization, Adodi, The Mazonni Center and William Way LGBT Community Center.
